About National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is an organization that was designed to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote worthy leadership, and encourage the development of character in high school students.
Sophomore, junior, and senior students who are considered for membership in NHS are expected to meet and maintain the standards of leadership, service, scholarship, and character. Students who already meet the scholastic requirement of a 3.5 cumulative GPA are offered the opportunity to show their qualifications in the other three areas by way of a completed form and written essay.
The packets are then presented by the sponsors to a faculty council made up of five teachers who review them for participation in school and/or community service activities(service), leadership opportunities taken by the student(leadership), and aspects of their character that make them good candidates(character). Opportunity for faculty input is also given to the teachers of Chantilly.
Those students who adequately show evidence of meeting the standards for the three areas are then invited to become members of NHS. A winter induction ceremony is held in the evening and parents and other guests are invited to attend.
